Look at the next map of the electoral college. WHY is there a difference between the number of electoral votes in some states? Because Census data changes every 10 years. People move away from or to states, making state populations increase or decrease. So, the number of electoral votes given to a state goes up or down according to how many people live there. Got it? Confusing...... but fair.

The "Electoral College" and Electoral votes:
In each state, whichever party garners a majority of popular votes, regardless of how narrow the margin, wins all the electoral votes. By forcing residents in each state ultimately to vote as a block, the system is supposed to ensure that small states' interests are not drowned out by those of larger states.
